With the recent news that Capcom is looking to bring more HD re-releases of their library to the current generation, I myself am currently playing Final Fantasy X HD Remaster on PS4, which is a re-release of a PS3/VITA game, which is HD version of a PS2 game.
Along with various rumours of games getting the port treatment and these HD versions selling well, like the above FFX/X-2 HD Remaster which has charted in the UK at Number 4 even though it’s been playable on PS3, VITA & of course PS2, got me thinking what would I like to see comeback on PS4, ONE, Wii U, 3DS or VITA.
There are obvious ones, like Mass Effect Collection for example, but thinking of the rumours and mock-ups we’ve been hearing about recently, they have one thing in common and that is 2006, which of course will be 10 years ago in just 7 months from now and this will provide a reason to bring back some games for their 10th anniversaries.
As Capcom inspired this, let’s start with them:
Okami was from Clover, now known to you all as Platinum Games. Their Zelda-esque title seems a no brainer for the IP owner Capcom to bring back again. I say again as the PS2 original has been ported to the Wii and is on the PS3 in HD, this means like of DmC & Devil May Cry 4 this could easily make the jump to current gen but just running in 1080p instead.
The likelihood of it coming out? Seeing its Capcom, I think there’s a good chance.
Staying with Zelda, what about an actual Zelda game?
You may have seen some recent mock-ups of this GameCube game and Wii launch title doing the rounds on the Internet as a New 3DS version (Like above). It was fake, but as we know from recent years the Big N like to re-release their Zelda titles and having TLoZ: TP come back in 2016 makes a lot of sense. Just for which system is the question. Will it be a full on HD version for the Wii U as does it need updating or just a simple port to the New 3DS like Xenoblade Chronicles, or even handing it to Grezzo who handled the 3D version of the N64 games and giving it something in between?
Or it could just come to the Wii U as a download, but that would be boring.
The likelihood of it coming out? I think this very likely but just when and what system is the question.
What about more Nintendo?
This one is a bit different to a lot of the games I am thinking of to make a comeback, as in the West we never got this and it doesn’t even have to be dolled up. Just bringing it to the West would be nice. There are fan translations of the GBA title, but not much else and after seeing Earthbound, AKA Mother 2 arrive on the Wii U’s Virtual Console there might be hope for this.
The likelihood of it coming? Slim, but if Nintendo were to work with the guy’s behind the fan translation to get this on a Virtual Console, that could be our best hope.
More RPG’s now:
As I said at the start of this, I am playing FFX at the moment and that’s actually the first time I’ve played it, so this game I want for personal reasons more than anything, so I can play it alos for the first time and experience more Final Fantasy.
The likelihood of it coming? I think it is quite high as Square Enix considering they brought back FFX, Type-O and soon to be released PC version of FFVII coming to PS4, plus their past historical behaviour.
Another game by Square, and I say collection as the PS3 has had some HD re-releases already, with Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix and 2.5 Remix, which both include various games based in the KH universe set around either 1 or 2. With the FFX/X-2 HD remaster making the jump from PS3/VITA to PS4, it’s not out of the question for these 2 games to do the same, but I would like to have them in one package. Also Number 3 is coming to Xbox One and there has been no KH on an Xbox platform, it might make sense to bring them up to speed with the series.
And yes it would fit for a 10th anniversary as Kingdom Hearts 2 came out in 2006.
The likelihood of it coming? There were rumours a while ago and with Squares previous history, I would think it is likely.
Calm down, I’ve got Western RPG’s covered as well:
Not much to say on this one, Bethesda has done a 5th anniversary edition of this in the past. That a 10th anniversary version isn’t out of the question, but I think it needs to be updated and with Bethesda likely working on Fallout 4, it would need to be outsourced. But it still remains my favourite Elder Scrolls, that I would likely go through a Oblivion gate again.
The likelihood of it coming? Not sure on this as there is reason to why it could and would from past releases of the game, but I think Bethesda has too much going on and Online is soon getting released on consoles. That’s where the TES experience will be for a while, so maybe a 10th Oblivion DLC or something would make more sense.
What you want more western games with guns? Okay what about:
The first in this forgotten series, Resistance: Fall of Man, which launched alongside the PS3 in Japan and North America, will be celebrating its 10th anniversary along with the PS3 itself in November 2016.
I don’t think the game is big enough on its own to merit a re-release, but with Resistance 2 and 3 it might make a lot of sense and Sony in the past did release all three games in a collection for PS3.
And if they do want to revive the series with a 4th instalment and make the leap to PS4 like with Killzone, this might be a great way to introduce PS4 owners.
The likelihood of it coming? I’m pretty sure Sony will do something for the PS3’s 10th anniversary and bringing back a launch title seems a good bet.
I’ve not forgotten Xbox series, before you start pointing fanboy fingers.
The Xbox platform's other big shooter and series is Gears of War and this has been rumoured to be coming to the ONE in some form for a good while. The rumours started back when the ONE got the Halo: Master Chief Collection and that we could see a similar thing called the Marcus Fenix Collection, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. It looks like it will be just Gears of War 1, kinda getting the Halo: Combat Evolved and Fable treatment around its 10th Anniversary, making the jump from the last gen to the current gen system.
The likelihood of it coming? It’s disappointing that it looks like it won’t be a collection of the three mainline Gears titles, as it would be great to play the excellent 2 again. But it seems pretty certain something is coming to the ONE from the previous games, with a leaked age rating submission as Gears of War Ultimate Edition, which with a name like that instead of having the Anniversary moniker after the title like Fable & Halo could see it come out this year, especially as we have seen leaked gameplay.
The only real question is will it just be a simple port or more of the vain of Halo: Anniversary with new graphics? From what we have seen it’s a bit in between with improved environment textures but the same character models.
Don't worry if you don't get to play any new games that come out as you'll get to play them again in 10 years time.
