Early this year I wrote a piece on my 10-favourite exclusive Xbox 360 games to mark the announcement of the console being discontinued after 10+ years on the market.
Looking back on it, I should have done something on a Top 10 in late 2015 when the Xbox 360 would have celebrated the 10th anniversary instead of waiting for the system to be killed off.
That’s not going to happen this time with the PlayStation 3 which on this day 10 years ago released in Japan.
Most of you may remember the awful showing of the PS3 at E3 with the infamous $599 and being told to get a second job to get one.
Personally, I feel this was Sony being cocky from coming out on top in the two generations, we would see something similar in a few years’ time from another company.
Sony did turn it around and as of typing this, the PS3 has sold around 87 million units making it the fourth best-selling home console and continues to get games released including the highly anticipated Persona 5 out February 2017 in the west.
I did get a PS3 pretty much at launch in the UK mainly for the Blu Ray capabilities (sounds familiar) along with the hope of playing some great exclusives the PlayStation family are known for and I finally get to play two of those games I was hoping to play on my PS3, one later this month and the other in December on my PS4.
Let’s move on to what you’ve come here for and that’s a good old list of my 10 favourite PS3 exclusives, yes like the Xbox 360 list you will not see the likes of Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect here also no HD remaster of PS2 games (Sorry Team ICO collection).
This list is in no rank order; they are just my 10 favourite PS3 games, I’d also like to point out some of these have been remastered for PS4 or available on PS Now but at the time they made the PS3 stand out and great system to own.
Without further ado…
I've got a confession to make, I didn't play flower on PS3, I played it on PS4. The reason why it is here though as artistic titles like Flower could only be found on PlayStation 3 and that's what made the system standout from the competition.
God of War III
We go from Flower to God of War III, which are very different games but show the diverse library of the PS3 with a game about emotion and art to another about just going around getting your revenge by destroying most of Greece along the way.
This might be most controversial pick as the whole games about making choices and experiencing a story over gameplay have come along way since Heavy Rain with the likes of Telltales The Walking Dead but their is something about David Cages games I enjoy and Heavy Rain is his best work.
I love this game, so much so Muss went and played it then came back and did a review on here www.gintendo.co.uk/reviews/2016/2/16/journey-ps4 and I will let him tell you all about it.
Xbox always had and still does have the upper-hand on the FPS genre with Halo. Sony will Killzone tried to have their Halo and unfortunately they never came close, that's not to say Killzone 2 isn't a great game as if it wasn't it wouldn't be here with its decent campaign and multiplayer especially Warzone mode.
The Last of Us
If you were to rank this games this would be pushing for the number one spot, now I do feel The Last of Us is massively overrated as I find it lacks in the gameplay department. Yet it has arguably the best visuals of any game on any system from the last generation and a story to match.
It may even have the best piece of story DLC content ever in gaming.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
I said near the start of the article when I bought my PS3 it was for the Blu Ray capabilities and a few games I knew were coming with the main one being MGS4 which at the time the graphics blew me away.
MGS4 is a hard one to explain to someone who's not played a MGS game before this one due to all the nods to previous titles especially the ending which is wrapped around what must be the longest cutscene ever.
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
When Ni No Kuni came out the Japanese RPG was not in a good place in the more traditional sense, then this Level-5 and Studio Ghilbi title sort of came out of nowhere to be huge here in the west.
So much so where getting a sequel on the PS4 and I for one can't wait to revisit Ding Dong Dell.
Okay I'm cheating and if I had to pick one of the three games then that would Uncharted 2 and when I said earlier that The Last of Us would be pushing for the number one sport if this was ranked list, well that number one spot would go to Uncharted 2.
Uncharted 2 is a cinematic gaming marvel and a must play.
The Unfinished Swan
When the PS3 is talked about when it comes to indies or artistic games a trio is normally talked about and this rounds the three out on this list.
If you want more gameplay then The Unfinished Swan offers it in spades over Flower and Journey but doesn't have as much as emotional impact as those two.
I hope you enjoyed this list and trip down memory lane which will continue when another console celebrates a 10th anniversary.
For now what are some of your favourite PS3 games?
