Around this time last year, I wrote an article about games that maybe should get the HD treatment in 2016 based on a few things like a 10th Anniversary or a newer game in the series coming out.
Well looking back at that article now, out of the sort of 8 games I brought up 2 of them did happen The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess HD and Gears of War Ultimate Collection, well there is Kingdom Hearts HD II.8 Final Chapter Prologue happening as well.
I did joke in the article about Capcom’s love of HD versions of games, we may not have seen my personal choice Okami come to PS4 or XBONE but that hasn’t stop Capcom bringing over a hundred and seven other games.
Like last year I’m going to look at games that maybe celebrating a anniversary in 2017 which might get a HD version announced sometime this year along with a few other picks because why not.
Looking back at 2007, it may have been one of the best years in gaming ever with just so much to pick from that myself and maybe you would like to see come back.
From the Third Parties
It may have been the fourth entry in the Call of Duty series, yet it was the one that put the series on the map and made it the million dollar gorilla that the series has become. Activision have done a few HD versions of games with most of them being rather lazy attempts. If they were going to bring back some of the older COD's it might be a better idea for a Modern Warfare collection with all three campaigns and all the maps in multiplayer.
Do I think it will happen? Well Activison haven't done many HD versions and any sort of HD version might take away from the main game that year.
This is the game that actually inspired me to do this article again with the recent talk of Final Fantasy XV and are favorite Final Fantasy games on Pod of War V. Where I found out that one of my favorite Final Fantasy's, Crisis Core, Dave "EofGizmo" Bellringer hasn't played it as the game is stuck on the PSP and isn't even on the VITA store under PSP games to download.
With fellow PSP Final Fantasy Type-0 coming over to PS4 & XBONE along with the Final Fantasy VII Remake happening. It maybe a good time to bring Crisis Core to the HD age and play it before the FFVII Remake is out for that sweet lore.
Do I think it will happen? I was wrong last year of most of my hopes of what me see from Square, the only thing it's Square anything could happen.
Well this is a interesting one also from Square as this is actually came out for the 10th Anniversary of Final Fantasy Tactics which came out originally for the PS1 in 1997. Now I'm not sure if you can play this on the VITA or not but that is the place I would liked to play it personally just due to the games art-style and gameplay of this title set in the Ivalice Alliance. I'd be more then happy to see any of the Ivalice Alliance come back especially Final Fantasy XII (Didn't I say that last year).
Do I think it will happen? I think this is unlikely as Square is focusing on FFXV universe and have FFVII Remake as well, that I doubt they'll want to start looking at more Final Fantasy games to promote, unless theirs a STEAM version or Mobile version like a few titles have gotten recently.
Last year I said I wasn't going to bring this up but in 2007, Mass Effect will be 10 years old and there has been rumblings of a Collection for PS4, XBONE and PC (again) for sometime but doesn't seem to be happening. With Mass Effect Andromeda not coming this year maybe EA will bring out a collection this year to keep Mass Effect fresh in are minds for 2017 arrival of Andromeda .
Do I think it will happen? Well we've heard rumblings of it but in a interview awhile ago EA said they didn't like the thought of HD Remakes as it takes to much time & money but I can see this being rather straight forward to bring over especially for a port house like Bluepoint.
And EA could you also bring back Skate while your at it, please.
Now your thinking what the hell is that Mas, well it's Karous. I'm guessing you've still not got any idea idea what that game is, what about Triggerheart Exlica instead. Still no idea, well both games are SHUMPS one by Milstone Inc the other by Warashi made for the SEGA NAOMI arcade platform but best of all both were the last two games officially released for the SEGA Dreamcast in 2007 in Japan. Both games have come out since again with Karous coming to the 3DS in 2015 for all regions and part of a SHUMP collection on the Wii in 2008. Triggerheart got a XBLA release in 2008 which did have HD visual but lacked some content like the story mode from the Dreamcast version.
I'm not sure who now holds these games licenses now without digging into it a bit more that to answer the question Do I think will see these two games get a HD version on PS4 or whatever, the answer can only be No but hey we've got Redux 2 coming to Dreamcast this year, so that's something.
Now with the ever growing popularity of the Fire Emblem series, it would be nice to go back and play some of the older games in the series. The Wii U already has 3 games in the series on the Virtual Console in the West and Wii games available to download on the system, it be nice to be able to download Radiant Dawn at least for a reasonable cost. Not to sure about it's even more expensive to buy prequel Path of Radiance on GameCube which haven't made an appearance on the Wii U part from the two Zelda HD's.
Do I think it will happen? Out of all the the games so far I've said about, I think a VC console version of Radiant Dawn is very likely.
Now we've had FireRed & LeafGreen remasters of the GameBoy Originals then we got HeartGold & SoulSilver remasters of the GameBoy Color games and most recently OmegaRuby & AlphaSapphire remasters of the GameBoy Advance titles. It can only be matter of time in till we get Temporal Diamond and Celestial Pearl for something.
The real question is what system more then anything would it be on, with Pokemon Sun & Moon coming out in 2016 for 3DS would remasters of Diamond & Pearl in 2017 be two soon after S&M. Looking back history has told us most of the remasters have come out two years after the last core installment and two system generations after the original version but in 2018 for D&P's 11th anniversary what would be the system 3DS still which is only one generation later from the original release or NX or something else entirely?
Do I think it will happen? If history has told us anything it will happen, it's just when and what on.
Now you you've read that caption there and your thinking, Mas it is on the Wii U VC and it's a DS game that I can play it on my 3DS if I wish. That is all true but what is also true is we've had a enhanced version of Link to the Past, Four Swords Anniversary Edition, Ocarina of Time 3D, Majoras Mask 3D, Wind Waker HD and most recently Twilight Princess HD.
Knowing all that, I can only see Nintendo bringing back Phantom Hourglass again in some way maybe HD for the NX.
Do I think it will happen? It's Nintendo and it's Zelda.
I've not got much to say about Super Mario Galaxy, I know it might be the Wii's best game but when I've tried it I've had issue's with the controls. This still applies to the Virtual Console release on the Wii U.
With a 10th anniversary and possible new consolein the NX what a way to kick start it off with Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 HD.
Do I think it will happen? I actually thought we would have had this in HD by now or Sunshine in HD but we've had neither of them. So to be honest I'm not sure.
I'm going to start of by saying 2007 wasn't a vintage year for Sony, it may have been one of the best for gaming in general but from a exclusive front, all I can maybe get excited to see again is these.
This I talked about on a episode of Pod of War as a forgotten PlayStation game and that's what it is a forgotten RPG set in Ireland with Pokemon like monster capturing with some poems & rhythms mixed in.
Do I think it will happen? No I don't but Sony the last few years to like to bring back games we've forgotten back but I just know if the fan bases is there compared to a Shenmue.
Talking about forgotten PlayStation games, I give you Heavenly Sword a hack"n"slash adventure in the vein of God of War which the second game in that series did come out in 2007 as well.
With Sony's partnership with Ninja Theory on Hellblade. It might be a good time to bring back Nariko and I still believe Sony will celebrate the PlayStation 3's 10th anniversary as well in someway.
Do I think it will happen? More so then Folklore but still unlikely.
With PlayStation VR coming this year, got me thinking of two series of Sony's. The first is The Eye of Judgment a card game that used the PS3 Canara to scan playing cards similar to Magic the Gathering on a playing surface. Once scanned they would appear on the TV screen and then you could battle with them.
Now I'm thinking in VR you could have a Virtual Deck of cards and see the battle field in front of you, to send out your monsters.
The other game is Warhawk which you would control the planes to do battle online.
Do I think it will happen? Both are strange IPs that Sony own but beth could work some how in VR which Sony may want to use established brands but not the big ones like Uncharted.
Microsoft may have had a even worse 2007 then Sony but it had a big gun in.
Now this is a odd one as it is on Xbox One in the Master Chief collection and may also be backwards compatible as well. The only thing is we have Halo & Halo 2 anniversary versions, I can only see the trend continuing.
Do I think it will happen? Halo is Microsoft's cash cow, which makes me feel they'll do a Halo 3 Anniversary.
What would guys like to see make a comeback?
