I’ve been thinking about doing something like this article for a while even before we even had Gintendo but in the last few days we’ve had some news which really irked me but then this morning we’ve had some good news from Square Enix.
Before I go on about my history with Square Enix and how they as a company have been up then down then back up and down over the past few years.
I’ll talk about the news we got this morning, which is the 4th version of Dragon Quest X which is the MMO based Dragon Quest that started back on the Wii then moved over to Wii U, has now been confirmed alongside the PS4 version the game, Dragon Quest X will be coming to the Nintendo NX.
Previous versions of Dragon Quest X have not made their way to the west yet but hopefully the game coming to PS4 and now NX means we do get the game but I’m not holding my breath.
Which is my point with Square Enix, they do these great things like announcing games for a new console and have hinted about Dragon Quest XI and Final Fantasy XIV also coming to NX.
Anyway as you may know I was a SEGA kid growing up that I missed the likes of FFVI, Secrets of Mana and Chrono Trigger from the SNES.
I moved on to the PS1 which might be Square Enix (Yeah I know the Square Soft and Enix hadn’t merged yet) best output, yet I was still pretty young when the likes of Final Fantasy VII came out in 1997 (I was seven) and wasn’t the sort of games I wanted to play, I wanted to play things like Crash Bandicoot.
When I move into my early teens, I moved away from PlayStation 2 where Square Enix continued to stay almost exclusive whilst I was playing on the other 3 systems of that generation.
My history with Square Enix on handhelds is slightly better but still not great as I’m not a big handheld fan but we move on to the last generation and this.
The last generation as you know started all the way back in 2005 and still going, that’s a long time and over the time I’ve of course got older and my taste in games have changed over those 10+ years.
And I wanted to play new games from Square Enix, now you look at their output with likes of Final Fantasy XIII in 2009, HD remasters of Kingdom Hearts which are fine but nothing really special.
So to me Square Enix didn’t have a good output from themselves but by buying studios like Eidos have kept Square Enix relative to me with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs and this has continued in to this generation.
Now we come to the PS4, ONE, Wii U and soon to be NX from the news we heard this morning from Square Enix. Later this month Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will be coming out and I’m pretty excited for that, I know people who are really enjoying the new Hitman and last year Square Enix published one of my favorite games of 2015 with Life is Strange.
And we have the big one which has been 10 years in the making coming out in just under 2 months Final Fantasy XV, the thing that irks me is to so with FFXV.
Just before I go on to that though Square Enix now publishes some great games from their western studios like Rise of the Tomb Raider last year on Xbox One, bringing out games we didn’t think we would get in the west like Adventures of Mana on the VITA, picking up games others didn’t want to publish in Life is Strange, letting independent studios use there IPs which we’ve seen with the Fear Effect KickStarter and content coming from themselves as in the space of a month we will get FFXV, Dragon Quest Builders and World of Final Fantasy with more still to come later in the year and if you’re only PS4 Rise of the Tomb Raider makes it way over & seems to have a ton of content including VR stuff.
Now we come to the news that irked me and this isn’t the first time either as we had a sort of preorder reward tier thing for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided which was thankfully dropped. The news is we our getting a season pass for Final Fantasy XV, I’ve got no issues with season passes but FFXV has been in development for 10 years and not all the content is going to be in the game.
I don’t know if this has been stuff that has been cut to be turned into DLC or completely new stuff, which the team might have not even started working on yet but still the game has been in development for this long that I want them to just focus on the game not extras for it already.
I can understand why as Square Enix want recoup as much of development cost as possible, which from reports seems like they need to shift 10,000,000 units of FFXV to do so, which is unlikely if you look at the history of Final Fantasy but due to the mixed reactions of FFXIII Trilogy people want a good Final Fantasy and how FFXV has been presented with demos and the world building with the anime & movie might be good & I feel there is hype around the game but will that be enough to shift that many units?
In case you’re wondering I have gone back to play some of Square Enix's library with mixed results some I’ve liked and some I haven’t, if you have watched Pod of War EPV Chocobros then you will know what some of mine and EofGiz’s favorite Final Fantasy games are and hopefully Final Fantasy XV is one as well in the future.
