When I think of games from Japan, I’m thinking of the likes of Tales of Series from Namco, Final Fantasy from Square, and Persona from Atlus but I know there is some quirky games that come out of the land of the rising sun, some even of genres which aren’t well represented in the west.
Such as a Dating Sim / Visual Novel, I don’t know of many that have come to the west but one which is rather unique did and that’s Hatoful Boyfriend.
What makes it unique over the other Dating Sim type games I know of, instead of trying to court a generic anime girl? You instead try to woo Pigeons, yes you read that right well there not all pigeons.
You start the game as a human girl that you name, doesn’t matter what you name her then you have the option to see the birds’ human form when you first meet them. If you turn that on, you get a picture pop up of anime character.
So after you done that you start your first day at a school for pigeons and other birds as the only human and girl as well it seems. Where your fellow class mates and teachers talk to you with a simple blue dialogue box, where you might have the option to talk back, go to a different class and this is where the fun starts.
I’ve finished the game 4 times now and getting 4 different endings out of the possible 13, each time I play I do different things. My first play though I got a job in a café and got tangled up in a gang ran by a budgie and a safety obsessed sparrow.
The reason I’ve played multiple times is because each time I play, I see new things and my choices matter later on if I date a certain bird or not.
As a visual novel one thing matter’s more than anything and that’s how it is written which and is with its funny and unique birds.
Overall I enjoyed what I’ve played so far and will be going back for more of this unique funny dating sim, I would recommend from let plays I’ve seen that you play co-op or stream it live to let the audience pick you choices and see what happens if you go look for pudding.
Carve that into your soul.
