This was my first taste of the Senran Kagura series, I’ve played. I knew of it due to the release of the first game in the west and its media exposure because of the games content but not much else.
What I’m talking about with the games content, you just need to see some of the physical editions of Deep Crimson
Yes you heard that right there is a Happy Boob edition and Catchphrase’s such as “Tits are life, Ass is Hometown”.
That when I started up the game on my 3DS, I was expecting to see anime style boob after anime boob well it’s not actually that bad.
The game starts with a cut-scene with typical cheesy music then you go right into the action where you play Asuka one of many Shinobi’s you play as of the course of the game in two rival groups of girls. Each girl play’s different due to weapons of choice and of course personality.
Once you get into the action get ready to button mash through countless repeating enemies & levels, yep the core gameplay element is a side-scrolling beat-em up in a 3D setting over 5 chapters which have about 10 levels in that are a few minutes long which is great for a game on the go.
At the end of most levels you have a boss fight against another shinobi apart from the last mission in a chapter which is the big boss of that chapter.
Chapters do tie in with each other but also feel like self-contained stories as well, thanks to almost visual novel type elements in between showing the girls and what they’re doing with in game or anime cut scenes. All spoken dialogue is in Japanese, there’s only English menus and subtitles.
Once you finish a level your girl levels up as well as get a ranking and getting a better rank unlocks things such as art, music but one of the biggest things which takes me back to the games content is you can unlock gear for the girls such as a cat ears, maid costumes, bikini’s along with new weapons but they don’t show off your favourite girls assets, quite as much as an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polkadot bikini on my personal girl of choice Homura which you will see when you power up or take damage and your clothes get ripped off, same applies to the enemies even the big bad guy.
You can change the clothes in the base hub, both sets of girls have a hub base where you can interact with one another and select change clothes, next mission etc by walking around the hub or by selecting on the touch screen which doesn’t have much use at all. The 3D is great especially at the end of a level if you failed or completed as your character poses then you can move the camera (If using a New 3DS the C-Stick can be turned on for camera control) around and get the effect of the girl’s assets in glorious 3D.
Like I said at the start, I’ve not played any others but from what I read before playing the CO-OP in Deep Crimson is a new feature. On certain levels in the game you will play as two characters who you can switch between during the level. Each level is specific to a certain character or paring in the main missions outside of those there’s a challenge mode, special missions, training and DLC. If you use a certain pair in the challenges for instance you’ll grow affection between the two girls.
Thanks to the CO-OP you can play the game online which I am yet to play as I couldn’t find any games before release. There is local if you have friend with the game and street passing as well.
Even though I did enjoy my time with the game, it is repetitive and the content questionable, that it’s hard to recommend to anyone not familiar with it before hand or looking for this sort of thing.
