I bring you not my first review of the year but my thoughts on Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star which is available for PlayStation 4 and VITA.
I’ve been playing the VITA version of Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star which is expands upon the extensive Fate universe with a story from acclaimed series writer Kinoko Nasu (of Fate/Stay Night fame), Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star features a diverse cast of “Servants” – ancient warriors of legend and imagination, always at their Masters’ orders – who survived the Holy Grail War that took place on the Moon.
In a future watched over by the all-powerful lunar super computer Moon Cell Automaton, these champions now battle for dominance over this digital realm, known as “SE.RA.PH.” This story takes place after the events described in Fate/EXTRA, and depicts the world after that previous Holy Grail War.
That may mean something to you but to me that could say anything as part from knowing of Fate/Stay Night and the character Saber which from what I’ve played isn’t the same one which appeared in such games as Nitroplus.
I found out this is class of Servant which you can play during combat along with various other characters and servants from Fate/EXTRA, Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Zero, Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order giving a diverse roster.
As someone that knows nothing about the backstory and lore, I say to me it’s a little confusing, yet loads to see and do be it interacting with other characters, doing special missions for them, checking out the gallery along with unlocking side stories.
Plenty for a fan to love, and that’s who I would recommend the game to a fan of the Fate series and lore.
Outside what makes this game appealing to fans is a pretty standard hack “n” slash game in the style of the Dynasty Warriors series where you fight waves of enemies, head to an objective and fight more enemies then fight a boss and repeat.
It’s fun if a little basic game yet is held together with plenty for a fan to enjoy.
