Job's Your Uncle
Like Final Fantasies of yore (1, III, and V anyway), BSEL has a job system. Different jobs have different special moves, ranging from magic (Black and White Mages) to powerful physical attacks (Monks and Knights) to stat boosts (Performers - think bards, but brought up to date for the modern area that BSEL isn't set in) to other, stranger ideas (Merchants). They also have different innate abilities: for example, the initial Freelancer job has a 75% chance to endure a fatal blow. Think Pokémon's Focus Sash.
Winning in battles earns Job Points as well as EXP, unlocking new special moves and passive abilities that can be used by other jobs. The job-related strategies run deep indeed, but to give a brief example: Red Mages have a passive ability that grants one BP every time they evade an attack, while Ninjas have a special move that guarantees to evade one attack. You don't need to have a high Intelligence stat to combine the two.
Trying out the job abilities was one of the best parts of Default, and it's tremendous fun here too. Plus, the outfits range from the sublime to the hilarious. I'll never get tired of Tiz in a top hat and monocle.
